80's Appetite-(retro food I miss)

I love food. Probably a little too much. I'm half italian so eating was always a big thing in my family. Only thing, I never like Italian food much. (Hey, I said I was "half" Italian!) I always loved junk food and still do. This is why I'm a pale white girl with big ghetto thighs and butt. I was a skinny little kid but I always loved to eat. There's so many foods I loved as a kid. Some are still around but sadly most of them vanished along with their mascots. I hold onto the hope that someday they might return but that looks as dim as Vanilla Ice making another hit record. (That one I'm not hoping will make a comeback.) Here's some of my favorites from my childhood that I absolutely loved with a passion.

"Peanut Butter Boppers"

These things were so freaking good. Seriously. My mom would bring these home and I could eat the whole box in one night. That's how good they were. Boppers was like a granola bar however it wasn't flat and rectangle shaped like the traditional granola bar. They were kind of shaped like logs. The outside was made of this crispy stuff and held together with some kind of chocolate I think. The peanut butter filled inside is what made them addictive. Especially to me. I never really like peanut butter by itself; I still don't; but when it's mixed with chocolate it's made into my weakness. I remember watching the commercial for Boppers back then and wondering why they have more then just that one corny ad for them. The commercial was basically some dorky kid, along with some other real winners, eating Boppers while this circus clown music played in the background.   Maybe it was lack of advertising that brought Boppers to their end. I still can't understand why because they were truly good as all hell. My mom usually bought the fudge chip flavor but they also came in Peanut Crunch and Honey Crisp flavors. I have found little information on Boppers as to why General Mills discontinued them in 1992 especially when their popularity started to rise. There is a site with a correspondent listed for Boppers. http://www.trademarkia.com/peanut-butter-boppers-73531589.html
I'm going to drop a line when day soon to beg for their return!

"Jello Pudding Pops"

I am not to sure if these still exist or not. I do know that I did buy them not too long ago. Maybe within the last two to three years. Why is there an online petition for Kraft foods to bring them back then? http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/pudding_pops/
I do know however that the last few times I was in the mood for them that they were nowhere in site in my grocer's freezer. One thing about these is that they hadn't changed at all since the 80's. The taste pretty much was the same. The only difference was they were now a lot skinner then they used to be.

But, beggars can't be choosers I suppose.  I guess making the pudding poops bigger like they used to be actually meant spending more money so they downsized it on us. They came in a variety of chocolate, vanilla, and swirl. I could care less if someone ate a chocolate pop but the vanilla ones were my god. You couldn't step to them. The swirl ones were great too but nothing could match up to the affair I was having with the vanilla pops. These days I don't see Bill Cosby dancing around with one of these in his hands. Still, whenever I see or hear of them I still to this day am reminded of it's greatness and of the younger J-E-L-L-O eating Bill Cosby; not the seventy year old man he is today.
Hopefully they were back to stay and I'll be able to pick up a box of them soon.

"Kebbler Magic Middles"

These were just magic as the name suggests. The middle is what made them magic. They had a pure chocolate center inside a vanilla like cookie. I loved to dip them in a milk bath. I would stare at the cookies and wonder how the hell they crammed all that sugariffic chocolate sauce inside without leaving one little hole on the cookie itself. The only reasoning I could come up with back then was what the commercial suggested...that the Kebbler Elves made them inside their little tree house.

That was a perfectly good explanation for me at that age. Sometimes I wish I were still as simplistic as I was back then. Magic Middles came in some other flavors also, such as peanut butter and chocolate chip, but to tell you the truth I never tasted them. Then, the Keebler Elves did the inevitable, they managed to shrink the Magic Middles turning them magically into "Mini Middles." That was some wonderful stuff. With Mini Middles you were able to shove all many of those sweet things in your mouth as possible. God, I miss them. You bet your sweet ass that I was the first to sign a petition to bring them back! http://www.petitiononline.com/MagicMid/petition.html

They ended up being discontinued like a lot of some other great Keebler products. Keebler tried to make a come back with them with "Holiday Magic Middles" featuring Disney Characters on the cookies. That was just as big as failure as Lil Kim's new single. (I'm sorry, I love Queen B and all, and I know the single is supposed to be a mockery of Nicki Minaj, but damn did that "Sex Toy" song sucked compared to her old shit.  )

The new cookies they tried to pass off as Magic Middles were nothing like the old school ones. They were basically oreos with a god damn Mickey Mouse or Goofy face imprinted on it. How sad.  Magic Middles were the shiznick and was just as equal as crack in my opinion. Keebler, pretty please bring them back!

Those were just some of the greats. Guarantee I'll have many more blogs about this subject.

  1. Those desserts sure look tasty! You know, CVS has recently been carrying some retro candy brands(from the 60's, 70's, and 80's); I see this as a good sign that these desserts may be re-issued too!
